Psalms Chapter 23
I Don’t Want Anything!
Verse 1 is very convicting:”The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Or as one translation puts it: “I lack nothing.” In other words, I have Christ and I don’t want anything else. Is this true for me? Is this true for you? Hey, I have a list of things I’d like God to provide for me. Things that I think will make life so much better. Really? SO MUCH BETTER!!!??? For how long? Then after that wears off, then what’s next on the list? Then what will make my life better? If I lost everything, would I find contentment in Christ? Or am I secretly looking for contentment in other areas, or other people?
Honestly, I like knowing I have friends who care about me and value me. It makes me feel good. Is that what I long for? Or do I long for a relationship with Christ more than anything else? Or anyone else? If I lost everything today, my family, my friends, my house, my money, my job, etc., would I find my true contentment in Christ? Or would I immediately begin trying to rebuild back everything I lost because that’s where I find my true contentment? Imagine with me for a second, think if you lost something or someone you value. My question isn’t, are you sad? Because of course you’d be sad. The question is: Is that what defines who you are? Is that where you find your true contentment in? Jesus, help me to find true contentment in you and not in others or other things. Thank you for the blessings of family and friends, a job and money, and some luxuries of life, but forgive me if that’s what defines who I am and is where I find my contentment in.
