Proverbs Chapter 20
I’m Struggling!
Verse 1 says, “Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.”
We live in a world today where alcohol is just a natural part of one’s culture. In certain social settings it is just expected that you’re going to drink. We also live in a world today where more and more individuals are struggling with depression and anxiety. As a result, suicide is common amongst those struggling in life. Depression and anxieties and alcohol go hand in hand with those who commit suicide. In fact, suicide is the number one leading cause of death in the USA for young adults. You don’t have to look very far to find someone struggling with alcohol and often it has already resulted in broken relationships amongst family and friends. Alcohol becomes a trap or an addiction. It’s a place of bondage that the devil loves to see inflicted upon God’s creation. To break free is a battle; a battle we can’t do on our own. We need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and godly encouragement from family and friends or social services. Sadly, there’s nothing one can do to help a loved one until they see their need for help.
Let us who have not been bound by alcohol be careful how we treat those who have or who are. May we show and give the proper love and encouragement. We may not struggle with alcohol but we struggle in other areas that need as much deliverance as those struggling with alcohol. Lord, help each and every one of us in our area of weakness. Amen!
