What Are You Doing Today That Shows You’re Getting Ready For Christ’s Return?
Jesus shares a parable about 10 virgins who are waiting to meet the bridegroom and compares that to those waiting for Christ’s return.
All 10 virgins took their lamps with them so they could see during the night. But five virgins were foolish and didn’t take extra oil while the five wise virgins did. Then when the virgins heard the bridegroom was here, the five wise virgins had enough oil to go meet him. The five foolish virgins did not have enough and had to go buy some more. The five wise virgins entered into the Wedding Banquet while the five foolish virgins were too late. They were not prepared. Jesus said to the five foolish ones, I do not know you.
I’m trying to compare the attitude of the virgins with those who are true followers of Christ and those who are not because the five really thought they were “good enough” to enter Heaven but weren’t.
The Attitude Of The Wise Virgins:
1. They were so looking forward to seeing Jesus.
2. If you’re looking forward to seeing Jesus then you are consumed by it and it is demonstrated on how you talk about Christ to others, starting with your family. It is demonstrated in your lifestyle. You want to be dressed properly. In other words you want to be clothed with the righteousness of Christ. You want to be holy because you’re meeting a Holy God.
I compare that to the first day of deer hunting. I can’t wait!!! My mind is consumed with it. I have my hunting clothes and equipment laid out ahead of time. I can’t help but talk about it. I want to see all my friends and relatives who go hunting with me. I’ll call them up in advance to talk, and prepare for a game plan on the first “glorious day” of hunting.
That should be our attitude with the coming of Christ: we are consumed by it. We are daily spending time with God and talking about it with others. And we clothe ourselves with the righteousness of Christ.
The Attitude Of The Foolish Virgins:
They had some excitement about it. But they weren’t consumed by the idea. They weren’t prepared. They just assumed they would automatically get to enter in because they went to church on Sundays. But they weren’t concerned about the clothes they wore. They didn’t dress themselves with the righteousness of Christ. Holiness was not important. They were distracted by the pleasures of this world and what it offered rather than what Christ offered. Sadly, when they stand before Jesus, they will hear the same words Jesus told the foolish virgins, “I do not know you!”
Are you ready? Be wise, not foolish!
