Don’t Get Too Comfortable You Brood Of Vipers!
Crowds of people are coming out to be baptized by John the Baptist. He made a few very harsh comments: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath of God? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance and do not say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ for I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
Once again, John is preaching repentance. Our world wants to be called Christian without having to take responsibility for their life choices. The Jews were so confident that they were going to heaven because they were descendants of Abraham. John made it very clear that it’s got nothing to do with your descendants. It’s all about your own faith walk with the Lord. And if repentance is not a part of your faith walk, then get ready for God’s wrath. True repentance results in producing good fruit for the kingdom of God.
The Jews became very COMFORTABLE with their title of being God’s chosen people that they became very sloppy with their faith walk.
Have you become comfortable in your faith walk? Be careful! Once we become comfortable we become sloppy Christians. We become hypocrites, like brood of vipers.
God is not impressed that we grew up in a Christian home. He’s not impressed that we go to church and pray and read our Bible. These are all wonderful things and should be a part of our life but if that’s what we’re leaning on for our salvation then we’ve missed the mark. Salvation is by God’s grace through our faith. It’s turning from sin and turning to Christ. Have you repented from your sins? Or have you become so COMFORTABLE with your Christian title that you feel turning from sin is not a necessity? REPENT and Be Saved (Luke 13:3,5).
