Jeremiah Chapter 17
Is Keeping The Sabbath Something You Do Out Of CONVENIENCE Or COMMITMENT?
God was pretty harsh with Judah saying, keep the Sabbath. The people were told to gather together and worship him. But out of convenience, people would take care of some of their work they didn’t get done during the week and lost Focus of total worship to the Lord. God said if they disobey this command they would be consumed with an unquenchable fire. It sounds pretty harsh, doesn’t it? Perhaps God wants us to realize how important it is to be together with one another, fellowshipping and worshiping Him!
Just because something is CONVENIENT doesn’t mean it’s okay. It’s not okay to violate a command of God because it’s CONVENIENT. I feel like I’m guilty of this because it’s easy to get LAX in my thinking and feel like God doesn’t care when in fact he does care. Are there exceptions to this command? I think so. Matthew 12:11 Jesus said that if one of your sheep falls in a pit on the Sabbath, you work to get it out.
Sadly, I feel like when Sunday comes around, people are quick to find a “good” excuse so they can stay home or take care of something “more important.” That’s the lax attitude we need to combat. Lord, put a flame in our heart that burns and says, “I’m committed and I can’t wait to gather together with others and worship the Lord”. Psalms 122:1 “I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.'”
