Genesis Chapter 34
That Ain’t Love, That’s Sin.
Jacob and all his family settle in a land with non-Jews. God said they are not to intermarry with each other. Later his daughter, Dinah, was raped by Shechem, the Hivite who said he “loved” her and wanted to marry her.
This reminded me of Christian speakers that would come and share about waiting to have sex till marriage. If a guy pressures a girl into wanting to have sex before marriage, then he doesn’t love her. If a guy said, “If you loved me, you’d let me!”The girl was instructed to respond, “If you loved me, you’d wait.”
Shechem says he loves Dinah, but then rapes her!! How is that love? It’s not!
Maybe we’ve never raped anyone, but we let our selfish desires influence how we treat our spouse, our boss, a person of authority, our friends, or even our enemies. Thus we end up treating them disrespectfully. That is not love. We can’t pat ourselves on the back for not being a rapist, when we show disrespect in other ways that hurts others.
Don’t just talk love, show it!
