Genesis Chapter 27
The Act of DECEPTION Starts in the Heart.
When Isaac had grown old and weak he wanted to pray a blessing for Esau his oldest son. So Isaac asked Esau to go hunting and bring back food for him to eat and then receive his blessing. Because Rebekah wanted her youngest son to receive the blessing, she told him to quickly go kill two young goats and she’d fix Isaac some food so Jacob could receive the blessing instead of Esau. So Jacob and Rebekah deceived Isaac and Jacob gets the blessing that was meant for Esau. When Esau returns with his food and for the blessing, Isaac soon realized Jacob deceived him. So Esau lost the blessing and became angry at Jacob and planned to kill him.
Well, this is like a reality TV show with all kinds of drama and deception. Shows the imperfection of the people God is using to fulfill his promises.
Deception seems to be a common word with this family. There’s a lot of thought that goes into their deceptive plans. And then they carry it out. In frustration or anger, I can let my mind wander with bad thoughts, but I don’t carry them out and actually do the deception or evil. Does this family have no conscience?
Perhaps, I should be more careful. God looks at the heart. I may do well to hide the evil in my heart while another person may openly Express their evil. Which is worse? We could argue, the one expressed is worse because of the greater number of consequences. But in God’s eyes, both are sin. I want to be careful lest my unrighteous thoughts be exposed as a way to humble my arrogance.
