Genesis Chapter 26
Learning To Be Content.
There was a famine in the region so God told Isaac to move to Gerar, the land of the Philistines. God declares that he will bless Isaac and his offspring.
Over a period of time, Isaac reaped hundredfold with his crops and God blessed him. He became very wealthy and had many flock, herds, and servants. As a result, the Philistines envied him and despised him.
Does that sound like us? Do we compare our wealth and possessions with others? Do we ever make comments like this?
“Oh, the Joneses go on vacation every year to Disney or the beach! They have a nice vehicle and a beautiful home. They make so much more money than we do!” It’s like we envy and despise the fortunes of others. It’s like we feel what we have to offer is not enough to enjoy life and show our love to our family.
I confess, I want to make more money so we can do more, especially as I get older.
But where does, “Learning to be content” fit into our lives? If we learn to be happy for the fortunes of others, while learning to be content with what God has blessed us with, we could enjoy love and life with the resources we have.
Paul said in Philippines 4:11-12:
I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
Philippians 4:11-12.
May that be our hearts as well!
