Genesis Chapter 22
I Hate Failing Tests.
Some years later, God tests Abraham and asks him to take his son Isaac, whom Abraham loved, and go to the region of Moriah and sacrifice Isaac on a mountain God has chosen.
This is a ridiculous request from God. But he asked Abraham in order to test and see if Abraham loved anything more than he loved God. If we love God more than anything, then we’re willing to give up anything while trusting the outcome.
Some things Abraham did showed:
1. He loved God more than anything.
2. He had faith that his son would live.
3. He trusted God to provide.
Hebrews 11.17-19 says Abraham trusted God and believed that if he were to kill his son as a sacrifice, that God would raise his son from the dead in order to fulfill the promise he gave Abraham that from his son would come a great nation.
How do I do when tested by God? Pass or fail? When I was 19 years old, I picked up a hitchhiker (which I don’t recommend doing), and it was during the winter and he had no coat except a 3-ft long throw rug over his shoulders. As I dropped the man off at a certain location, God spoke to my heart saying to give the man my coat. The coat I was wearing was my letter jacket with all my pins and awards and patches from my success in Cross Country and track. Ultimately the man left without my coat.
In essence:
1. I loved the coat more than I loved God because to love God is to obey what he asked you to do.
2. I loved the coat more than I loved the man in need, obviously!
I’m thankful for forgiveness and today I want to be obedient and trust God with my life and not hold on to any possessions he might ask me to give to someone in need. If he asked me to give then I want to be able to trust God to meet my needs. God, show me what you would have me to do with my walk with you and then help me to trust and obey.
