Genesis Chapter 2
The Sabbath
Chapter 2 starts with the seventh day… Which was the day God rested and the seventh day is given a name: Shabbat meaning Sabbath. Which means to cease, to stop, or to quit working. It doesn’t really mean resting by not doing anything at all. It’s stopping what you were originally doing. Taking a break. Letting your body rest from the routines of life.
So God wants us to stop doing our routines and make this day holy which is a great opportunity to focus on him through our time of Fellowship with other believers, Church and worship.
I won’t argue that you shouldn’t be doing any kind of work, but I would say what work you do should be so different than the norm that it allows your body to recoup from the week’s activities. And the day should be centered on Christ our creator so his name is being lifted up and not our own.
May we all be challenged to be more aware of how we are spending our “Shabbat” days.
