Genesis Chapter 19
How’s Your Spiritual Influence?
Two angels come to Lot living in Sodom and tells him he and his family need to get out of Sodom immediately because God is going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of their evil and wickedness.
Their family had lived in the evil town of Sodom for so long that they became accustomed to its evil and were numb to all of the sin going on. They hesitated and found it hard to imagine the hope of a new life outside of Sodom.
1. The two future son-in-laws didn’t want to leave and didn’t.
2. Lot hesitated to leave because he couldn’t imagine living anywhere other than Sodom.
3. The wife, after being told not to look back, became overwhelmed by the destruction going on at Sodom, looked back because her heart was still there. As a result, God turned her into a pillar of salt.
4. The two daughters got their dad, Lot, drunk so they could have sex with him so they could become pregnant and carry on their bloodline. Sodom was so much a part of their lives that they were convinced in their mind they’d never meet another man to marry and have children with. Sex with their dad seemed natural to them, but why not, because Sodom was so full of sexual immorality.
Perhaps we’re not so different. We can become so accustomed to sin around us that it subtly becomes a part of us. God calls us out of sin. Not that we are not to be around sinners, but we are not to surround ourselves with the influence of sinners. When confronted of our evil influences, we find it difficult to come out of that lifestyle. And when we try to, the temptation to return is great.
How is your spiritual influence? How is your alone time with God? How is your church attendance? Who are your Christian friends that you have surrounding and influencing you? How you answer these three questions will determine what subtle risks you are putting yourself into.
