Genesis Chapter 18

Be a Servant. A Good Servant!

This chapter starts by saying the Lord (Yahweh) appears to Abraham. There are three men who appear before Abraham out in the middle of nowhere. We don’t know who the three men are as a whole but it does say one of them was Yahweh meaning the Lord. It appears God comes in human form.

When Abraham sees them, his servant heart immediately kicks in. He hurries and runs to:

1. Get them water so he can wash their feet.

2. Have his wife to get the best flour to bake bread.

3. Get the choice tender calf for the men to eat.

4. Get his servant to prepare the calf.

5. Abraham goes the extra mile to make sure they have curds and milk with their food.

6. Then he has them eat in a shaded area away from the hot sun.

Honestly, I want to be that kind of a servant. When I see a need I want to give my best and not my second best and I don’t dilly dally about it. Like it’s not even an option. This is just what I do is give my best.

Unfortunately, it’s easy to label people on whether or not they deserve our best or even deserve our attention at all. We put limitations on whether we like them, whether they’re popular or not, or they’re cute or famous enough, or base it upon whether they’re a “bad sinner” or “righteous” people like ourselves (sarcasm).

Once we start to define a criteria on whether or not someone is worthy of our servant heart, is when we become arrogant and put ourselves above others. At that point we are no longer a true servant because a true servant understands humility, love, sacrifice and looks at others as if they are better than ourselves.

Put your servant heart on today and serve someone and don’t exclude anyone God puts in your path.

One could say, Abraham was a great servant because he knew it was God. I don’t know that for a fact but I do know this as a fact: Jesus tells us to serve even the least of these doing it as if they are Jesus themselves. Who is the least to you? Serve them!
