Genesis Chapter 17
Get Real!
Abraham was 86 years old when he had Ishmael with Hagar. 13 years have passed and Abraham is 99 years old. God appears to him and declares his promise once again that he will have a son, with his 90-year-old wife Sarah, and from that son will come many nations.
God declares that one day they will enter a promised land in Canaan and will possess it.
Interesting, because Abraham is currently living there. But the fact is, he does not possess it. He lives there but he doesn’t possess or own it.
It’s like us today. We are promised heaven through a relationship with Jesus Christ. We might call ourselves a Christian, we might have a lot of head knowledge about Christianity, but the question is, is that what God is looking for in order to possess or inherit heaven? God is not looking for head knowledge but heart knowledge. Head knowledge looks good but it’s fake. Heart knowledge is real! With heart knowledge comes:
1. Brokenness because one recognizes their sins.
2. Humility because one recognizes that apart from Christ they are nothing.
3. A drive, a motivation, a hunger and thirst not just for Christ but for the righteousness of Christ. A drive to be a servant for the Lord by serving others. It’s being consumed by the word of God bringing a transformation in one’s life.
