Genesis Chapter 11
Are You Making A Name For Yourself?
The chapter starts by saying the the whole world had one language and a common speech. In chapter 10 it said they had a different language but though it was different it was common enough that people could understand each other. And as they expanded in numbers they had the goal of staying together as much as they could so they could become powerful as one. They also devised the plan to build a tower to the heavens so they could make a name for themselves. God destroyed their plan and caused them to scatter further throughout the Earth by coming down and giving different languages to different groups of people so they could no longer understand each other.
This could happen to any of us. We get settled in a job, a Ministry, in certain gifts that we acquire, and over time will allow ourselves to lose focus of God. We lose focus that God is the Gift giver and provider and we easily begin to feel self-confident and become arrogant. Our speech becomes less about God and His greatness and gradually over time it’s more about ourselves. Oh, I suppose we could say it’s all God, but in our hearts we are really wanting people to think we are great versus how great God is.
Be careful! This could happen to any of us. Perhaps we’re in the beginning stages right now. Let’s snip it in the butt and get refocused on the Lord, NOW!
