Exodus Chapter 20:8-11

“Remember the Sabbath Day To Keep It Holy!”
There are many different explanations as to what this passage really means. I don’t want to become so legalistic about this that I end up looking like a Pharisee while not addressing the heart of the person. Here’s what I think is important with this commandment:
1. We need to rest from our work or we’ll burn out. Some people have to work everyday so you need to be creative in having your rest time.
2. On that day of rest we need to be intentional in keeping our hearts on the Lord and his holiness. This is a heart matter not a legalistic practice.
If our heart is really wanting to pursue the Lord, I feel it is important to have that day of the week where we are connected to the church so we are fed spiritually. All week we work hard physically, we need one day of the week where we are fed spiritually and encouraged by the rest of the body of Christ, called The Church. But this also can’t be done legalistically where we say we went to church but we never connect to God or the people. We need the Lord and we need each other because it’s too easy to get stagnant with one’s faith.
Some people work on Sundays so that person has to be creative on how they can be connected to the body of believers whether that means they go on a Wednesday night or Sunday night. Or they get connected to a Bible study during the week.
So remember, this is a heart matter. Is the heart excited about resting and being connected to the body of Christ, or are we more interested in looking for excuses so we can rest without being connected to the Lord and the body of Christ?
