Exodus Chapter 20:4-6
Don’t Be Making Any Idols!!
Commandment #2:
God said, Do not make an idol to worship it.
It’s easy to conclude that this commandment is one we don’t break because we don’t have anything that we’ve made that we set up somewhere in our house to worship it.
Wait a minute, perhaps this is more of a problem than we think. We don’t actually make an idol physically but we make it in our hearts.
Some people talk about their pastor, or sports team, etc. as if they are a god. They are consumed by them! They invest so much of their time in their pastor or team. Their relationship with the Lord greatly diminishes. This is the same with any relationship, like a boyfriend or girlfriend, or best friend. We want so bad to be with them all the time that our relationship with the Lord is greatly hindered. It is the same with our hobbies or any kind of activity. Really, anything that hurts our relationship with our Lord is becoming our god. Evidence of this are: our devotional time diminishes, our church attendance decreases, hanging around Christian friends becomes not as important. Being holy before God is no longer a priority as we make decisions that compromise our faith for the pleasures of this world.
Together, let us destroy the idols we have made in our hearts!
