Exodus Chapter 19
Isn’t God Such A Loving God?
God sets a date with Israelites where they come before him at Mount Sinai. But before they can enter into his presence they are to take two days to consecrate/make clean their lives and their garments.
When they finally come before God at Mount Sinai, God presents himself with fire, smoke, thunder and lightning, and violent quakes. Fear falls on the people. He says if anyone touches the mountain where God is they will die. God is Holy and cannot have any unholiness in his presence. God could have shown himself to the Israelites with a sweet soft voice which would display his sweet loving side. But God is more than just a loving God. Our world wants to look at God as if he is just a loving God and that he accepts any behavior as acceptable. But this passage is a reminder that he is more than just a loving God. He’s also a holy God and desires us to be holy which we can do through Christ. The thunder and lightning and all that came with it is a reminder that God is also a God of judgment and won’t tolerate sin.
May we all evaluate our own standing before God. Yes, he loves us unconditionally, but just as no one could go into his presence without being holy, so we too must be holy before God which is accomplished through a relationship with Christ. And one day we will stand before the God of judgment. We have two options: 1. Spend eternity in hell the Lake of Fire separated from God forever, or 2. Spend eternity in heaven with the Lord and all his followers.
