Deuteronomy Chapter 5
“Shamar”: Observe. Keep. Guard. Preserve.
Moses repeats to the Israelites the 10 Commandments so they can “learn” and “observe” them. The Hebrew word for observe is “shamar” which means to observe, to keep, to guard, and to preserve.
In other words, God’s laws are not something you just hear and say, “That’s nice.” But rather, God’s laws are to be preserved and never forgotten. To guard so that no one ever changes them or minimizes them. To keep and obey so that one’s life is both holy and transformed.
May we also invest into God’s Word and learn it so we can be obedient in fulfilling his Word. May we have a fear of respect for God so that we obey his Word in Holiness and Truth. May we guard his truth, keep his truth, preserve his Truth by teaching our family and those around us.
