Deuteronomy Chapter 24
Don’t Neglect The Foreigners, Widows, And Orphans.
God commanded the Israelites that the needs of foreigners, widows, and orphans be taken care of. Those with crops, once they harvested it and later notice they forgot a section of the crop, were not permitted to go back and harvest it because they were to keep it for the widows and orphans and foreigners in need of food.
In our world today the need is still there but our culture is different. In James 1:27, it says, “Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: take care of orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” So what do we do with this verse? How should it affect our life choices? 1st Timothy 5:22 says we must take care of widows first in our own family and not to neglect them. But second, we must be aware of foreigners, widows and orphans and help them even outside our family. How?
1. Adoption of a child is an option that many people take which I admire.
2. Adopting an elderly person who lives alone is also a great idea. Make them a part of your routine to visit and even include them in your family functions.
3. Be a big brother or sister to a child from a broken family.
4. Reach out to the new person on your block
5. Do something because doing nothing is not an option mentioned in the Scriptures.
CHALLENGE:
In your family, or church, or neighborhood, are there kids who are from broken homes or an elderly person that is a widow, or a new person? Reach out to them!
