Deuteronomy Chapter 17
God’s Criteria
God gives a criteria for choosing a king.
1. He shouldn’t be a foreigner.
2. He shouldn’t seek to multiply for himself horses, wives, silver, or gold. Such things would only turn them from the Lord.
3. He should never return Israel to Egypt, the place God delivered them from.
Most of the criteria is applicable for anyone choosing to follow the Lord Jesus.
1. We should be careful wanting more and more stuff because it would be easy to lose focus and attention on the Lord. We will either be consumed with stuff or consumed with Christ. Philippians 4: 11-12 and Matthew 6:24.
2. Never return to the life God delivered you from. When God delivers you from evil, then don’t let temptations take you back to that evil.
3. As followers of Christ, make the word of God a priority so that you don’t get tempted into a life of sin. Psalms 119:9-11.
As Dwight Moody once said, “The Bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the Bible.”
Be careful which option you choose.
