We Mark 2:18-20. Perhaps We Should Be Celebrating More!
John’s disciples were fasting. The Pharisees and their disciples were fasting. The Pharisees asked Jesus why he and his disciples were not fasting? Jesus responded, “When the bridegroom is present, the attendants of the bridegroom do not fast.”
In Jesus’s illustration, he was referring to himself as the bridegroom and the attendants are his disciples. So as long as Jesus is present, it’s a time of celebration. Why wouldn’t they? He is the Son of God, the Chosen One, the Savior of the world! But Jesus said a time is coming when the bridegroom will be taken away, referring to his upcoming arrest, death, resurrection, and Ascension. It’s at these times his disciples will fast.
I’m thinking about my relationship with Christ. How much do I esteem him for all he has done for me? How much do I celebrate the work he has and is doing in my life? Lord, help me celebrate more often, to see your goodness in my everyday life. Help me rebuke the devil when he tries to Blind me of your work and goodness in my life. And Lord, when trials and tribulations come, help me to set aside more time of prayer and fasting. Help me surrender every hardship to you while putting my trust in you 100% that you will turn the hardship into a blessing. Amen ššš
