Vs 17: Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets,”
The law and the prophets are the Old Testament. The fact that Jesus fulfilled the law and the prophets doesn’t mean it’s no longer relevant for today.
How did Jesus fulfill the Law? He was perfect. He did not sin or make any mistakes. Everything the law required from us to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, we failed at. We sinned and did not keep the law. In fact, we were born sinners. We were born already condemned to hell when we came into being. Jesus came to Earth to provide forgiveness of our sins by the sacrifice of his body. He shed his blood, he died, and he rose from the dead, back to life.
Because Jesus was born from his father, God, he did not inherit the sin nature. Because Jesus obeyed the law to the “T”, he was able to be a perfect sacrifice for us.
Forgiveness of sins was originally provided during the days of the Old Testament through the shedding of the blood of animals. The blood was required because blood represented life (Hebrews 9). However, an animal sacrifice was temporary. But God prophesied the coming of a Savior who would be a perfect sacrifice: no sin, no blemishes, no imperfections. Because Jesus was perfect, he would make one sacrifice, once and for all humankind (Hebrews 9:22,26). The fact that he rose from the dead back to life, is hope for us that though we are dead in sin we are guaranteed a new life in Christ. This new life lasts forever, for eternity in heaven.
