Read Matthew 21:4-11
Jesus, Don’t Just Take My Garments And Palm Branches, Take My WHOLE LIFE.
Jesus instructed his 2 disciples to go and bring back a donkey and its colt so he could ride on it into Jerusalem. He did this in order to fulfill the Old Testament prophecy that the Messiah would ride into Jerusalem, as a king, on a donkey with its colt. This gives evidence of one more fulfilled prophecy by Jesus proving that he is the Messiah.
The disciples put some of their garments on the donkey for Jesus to sit on. As he entered Jerusalem the multitude spread their garments in the road, and others cut palm branches from trees and laid them on the road as well.
1. In II Kings 9:13, the spreading of garments were laid out before King Jehu as a way of showing respect, honor, and submission to the king.
2. The spreading of palm branches was a symbol of victory, triumph, and peace which is appropriate for Jesus since he came to bring victory over sin. He would triumph over the power of death and bring us a new life in him: one of Salvation and peace.
The multitudes were traveling before and after Jesus shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” Hosanna means, “Save Now.” They saw Jesus as a Savior who would deliver them from the Romans, an Earthly power. But Jesus came to save us from our sins and free us from the spiritual power of death. He would give us new life, eternal life.
Do you recognize Jesus as the savior of your soul? What have you yet to lay before him in order to show Jesus 100% loyalty, honor, respect, and submission? What are you still lacking? He wants your whole heart, soul, mind, and strength.
What words of praise do you give to the Savior of the World? Is your praise heard amongst the multitude? Or is your praise something silent because you don’t want anyone to know that you’re a Christian.
Let today be the day that you shout “Hosanna to the Son of David!” and lay before him all your heart and all your life.
