2nd Samuel Chapter 21
Don’t Break A Promise Or Commitment.
When King Saul was alive he made an oath before God with the Gibeonites to protect them but instead he killed many of them. Eventually God showed his anger by causing a famine to occur in Israel for 3 years. King David asked the Lord why they were going through the famine and God said because of when King Saul shed innocent blood when he broke a promise he made with the Gibeonites. So David went before the people and asked what he could do so they could have peace with each other and settle the brokenness. The Gibeonites said what they wanted and King David delivered it to them and peace came upon them once again and God took away the famine.
Let this be a reminder to all of us that once we make a promise with God or anyone else, then we need to keep that promise. If you don’t keep that promise, then it is a sin and we need to go to God or the individual and make it right with them.
Years ago as a youth pastor in Butler pa, I made a commitment to abide by the churches dress code on Sunday morning. It required me to dress with a suit and tie and not jeans. Personally, I don’t like suits and ties so I gradually began to violate my commitment. This was beginning to upset the head pastor and the Sunday I came with “dress jeans” was the day he blew up on me. I made a commitment and I broke it. On Monday morning I went to the pastor and apologized and eventually our friendship was restored and still is to this day.
