2nd Samuel Chapter 1
Don’t Just Say You Care, But Show It.
An Amalekite man came to David with Saul’s golden crown and bracelet saying Saul and his sons were dead. He confesses to David that he killed Saul by Saul’s request because he said Saul was going to die so he killed him so he would not suffer in death. David was angered that the Amalekite was not afraid to kill the Lord’s anointed and had him slain dead.
There are some unanswered questions with this account. Why did the Amalekite take the golden items from Saul? Was it for selfish, greedy reasons? Why was it three days before he reported he reported Saul’s death to David? Did he later think David would give him an even bigger reward for bringing the golden items and reporting the news of Saul’s death? Was greed his motive? He was an Amalekite so he was an enemy to israel. His motive is unknown, but God knows the man’s motive as he knows our motives as well.
How concerned are we at the welfare of others? Are we more concerned about ourselves than we are others?
I remember as a kid that my neighbor let me take her motorized mini bike for a ride. On my return, I hit a pothole and lost control of the mini bike and it tipped over. It messed up the front fender and mirror while I scraped my legs and arms from sliding on the road. When I returned, she was in our house and I was crying as I told her that I wrecked her bike. She got up and said, “Oh my goodness, are you okay?” But before she could finish saying “are you okay” she was already going out the door at a fast pace to make sure her bike was okay. She said words that sounded like she cared more about me than her bike, but her body language was saying, “Oh my goodness I hope my bike is okay.”
It’s easy to get trapped into a world of ME, ME ME. It takes self-control, humility, unselfishness, and true love to not just see a need but genuinely respond to it as well. Love you guys! Have a good day!
