1st Timothy Chapter 6
Be Careful Of Your Love For Money
Paul gives caution to those who are constantly trying to “keep up with the Joneses!” – those who want to keep buying stuff. He calls us to learn to be content so that we become good stewards with our money. He says that those who are all about money and being rich are likely to fall into temptation. Love for money is the root of all kinds of evil and end up causing many to wander from the faith.
I was in a conversation with an elder of a church 5 years ago who said he buys lottery tickets because he sees that as the only option for a retirement plan. I’m not comfortable with such a plan. I don’t care if someone does the lottery but once one becomes dependent upon it, then I see a huge problem. I feel God wants our trust in him and not in the lottery system.
Paul even gives these two commands which I think is beneficial for all of us:
1. Those who are rich are not to be arrogant and are not to put their hope in wealth but in God.
2. Instead Paul commands us to be rich in Good Deeds and in our Generosity toward others.
Where is our trust? In money or in God?
What consumes our thought process more? Money or doing good for others?
