Is Holiness Our Motive?
Paul puts forth challenges to both the men and women. The common denominator is for them to be holy people.
The men are challenged to be praying people in holiness without anger or disputing. Anger and disputing often arise out of selfish people. If they don’t get their way or are not recognized as they feel they should, then they become angry and dispute those who oppose them. Apparently, the men struggled with their egos, their pride, and selfishness so that Paul had to address this issue. How about us, men? Do we struggle with anger? Are we always trying to dispute those who oppose us? Are we selfish people?
The women, apparently were struggling with being modest in their dress attire. They wanted to be recognized by others so they dressed in indecent ways. Paul challenged them to be women who focused on their inner beauty and not just their outer beauty. Paul challenge them to dress modestly while showing good deeds in the name of Christ with holiness. Paul wasn’t saying they shouldn’t dress nice but was saying dress respectfully and not seductively. Holiness is to be the goal in how we dress and how we act. Do people see our Good Deeds for Jesus? Or are we too busy focusing on being recognized in our physical beauty that we compromise our acts of Holiness and goodness?
