1 Samuel Chapter 8
Is It Really Worth The Risk?
Samuel was soon going to die so the Israelites demanded from Samuel a king to rule over them like all the other nations. This hurt Samuel and God because it was a way of rejecting God and desiring to be like the godless world. God spoke to Samuel the words he wanted said to the nation Israel. God said he could appoint a king for them but a king would eventually become arrogant and power driven and money hungry and end up mistreating the nation for personal gain. God said that when this happened, they would cry out to him and he wouldn’t listen because they have rejected him over a desire for an earthly King rather than him as king of their lives. But the nation insisted upon having an earthly King even after the warning from God.
The nation of Israel was stubborn and insisted on earthly rule by a mere man while rejecting God’s headship. It’s easy to become stubborn before God. If we get something locked in our head of something we want, even if the consequences are horrible, we insist upon it because we think it will make our lives better or happier even though it ends in disaster.
