1 Samuel chapter 29. Who Are You Loyal To?
The Philistines were gathering all their men to go up against Israel and the king of the Philistines was prepared to take David and his men to fight against his own people, the Israelites. David felt no loyalty to Israel for how King Saul and his men had tried to kill him several times. But the leaders of the Philistine armies insisted that David not come for fear that In the heat of the battle he’d decide to be loyal to Israel and fight against the Philistines.
Sadly, David’s enemies, the Philistines, treated him better than his own people the Israelites. The Philistines loved and respected him while the Israelites despised and hated him.
When I was in high school, I went through a phase when I felt I had no friends. I wanted to be accepted and found that the “Bad Rough” students were more accepting of me than the Good” students. So I was more drawn to the “Rough” kids. One has to be very careful where one’s loyalty really is. Is it first and foremost for the Lord? If not, then it becomes easy to conform to sinful desires of the world. Following Christ sometimes means being alone but that’s not an open door to making bad decisions. David was accepted by the enemy and was loyal to them and was ready to fight against his own people.
Who do you surround yourself with? Are they helping you follow the Lord more or less? Be careful! Stay loyal to God over anything or anyone else.
